My work with couples is based on Imago Relationship
Therapy. Imago therapy helps couples to better understand the
dynamics of their relationship; to improve their communication; to
be respectful of each other's point of view; to resolve conflicts;
to meet each other’s needs; to have a romantic connection; to have a
loving relationship…to have the relationship of their dreams
through a process of healing dialogue and re-connection.
When we fall in love, it’s supposed to be forever. We
meet the person of our dreams and a magical transformation takes
place within us. We feel alive, whole, safe, and happy. Over time
that magical feeling disappears and conflict often increases. We
feel disappointed and blame our partners because they are not
meeting our emotional needs. We may criticize, withdraw, shame,
explode, intimidate, shut down or submit as we try to deal with our
hurt feelings and disappointment during times of conflict. Some
couples stay in this painful power struggle for years feeling that
they have grown apart. Imago
therapy helps couples transform their relationships. Couples learn
that conflict is growth trying to happen. The Dialogue process
fosters safe, open, honest communication. By understanding their
partners through the Dialogue process, couples re-connect and their
relationship often evolves into the powerful bond that is real love.
Through Imago therapy I help couples create a
sacred space for healing and growth that can lead them to a more
loving, respectful and passionate relationship.
Imago Relationship Therapy was created by Harville
Hendrix, Ph.D., and his wife Helen LaKellyHunt, Ph.D. Dr. Hendrix’s
book Getting The Love You Want: A Guide for Couples is the
best book I have ever read on marriage.
